Check out this article about University students who buy class notes online (the type of jot notes we learned about during the slave trade research)
what do you think. Is it stealing or just sharing?
http://www.parentcentral.ca/parent/education/article/956998--paying-for-class-notes-online-sharing-or-cheating
I think it is stealing. I know that there seem to be many comments made by others who read it and in the article as well who support this idea. But if you miss a class or lecture, it's your responsibility to get the notes but from a friend. Taking notes from someone you don't even know is basically like stealing. And university students are smart and should know that if they miss a class, it's their responsibility to catch up; just like here in elementary school and high school.
ReplyDeletei dont really thnig that is stealing because our class did that for the music test but we never paid we emailed it to eachother so we can study.
ReplyDelete@ Alyssa i can agree alittle because i thnik when we were doing studying for music and the notes were being emailed,i think i saw your name,so let me ask you would that be stealing if the teacher gave them the study sheets?
ReplyDelete@Vanessa but you got those notes from your friends. Asking from your friends is sharing and helping but taking from the Internet from people you may not even know is stealing because 1, you don't know them and 2, they worked hard to make them. I don't want to say it's like plagerism but it almost is.
ReplyDelete@Vanessa what do you mean you saw my name because I did not get any notes.
ReplyDeleteAnyways, if a teacher gave you a study sheet, I don't think it would be stealing because the teacher specifically gave it to you so you can study.
@ Aylssa but there could probably be websites for students to study, and it could be legal for kids, and teens to study.Liek my little sister goes on eduvational sites and she studies through there, and what if you had like 5-10 pages to read before a test.or you could just go on a site where you can read the summay, and do activites you help your understanding.
ReplyDeletesorry typo i spelled like wrong!!
ReplyDelete@Alyssa, i agree with you getting notes from a teacher or a friend is fine but if you surf around on internet for any help, your going to find places with people like note wagon and study monkey.plus the music quiz was just simply on what we wrote down for studying :P
ReplyDelete@jan101 but some people never finished copying the notes too!!
ReplyDelete@Vanessa, oh yeah but i made Heli send them to me because i told her i didn't finish and she told me she will send it to me soo i had a back up :P , did u get the notes by hotmail too???i just needed the last part
ReplyDelete@Vanessa notes are like answers. Getting them from some website is like cheating and/or stealing so I just don't think it's right. And on educational sites they teach you things like a class. They don't give you the notes.
ReplyDeleteI think its stealing because taking note in class is suppost to help you when it comes times to test and quizzes. What if you buy note and some of then give you the wrong information its better to get then from a friend or someone you know so you can get the right answers. If you miss school you should either find out from the teacher of ask a friend if you can see the note from last class.Like what i do if i go to band and i miss math or science i ask someone to write down what the homework is or if there was anything important to tell me so im ready for next class
ReplyDeletei think what we were doing is sharing because it not like they were answers but they were only the study street which we reviewed in class and copied from Mrs.merraro but what note wagon and study monkey are doing i think its pretty obvious its stealing because if you missed an lecture or whatever thats really your fault
ReplyDelete@ Stephanie your buying the notes online that doesn't count as stealing; it's not the same as buying it from someone randomly at school they might check it and review it over before they are aloud to have it up to buy for the people that are in charge of the site.
ReplyDeleteThis isn't the same as the book cheat where they got the test from someone this is what you have to know not the answers like a,a,b,b,c,d,a it's the information.
When you get to higher grades it isn't that easier to catch up this way buying the notes is more convenient then asking your friends, think about it your friend(s) weren't there ether or the teacher is gone the next day.
well both ends are heavy;
ReplyDeletein some situation, it would be called sharing and in some, it would be more of cheating.
but for me, i wouldn't call it cheating but the people who use these things, are being really lazy.
@ i agree with you Alyssa, taking notes from your friends is fine but not if you don't the person,go find it somewhere on the Internet and also you have to pay for it.it better if you payed attention in class, you learn it, understand it better then having to find notes on the internet.
@ jan okay it's our fault but we still need to get the notes some how and this way it is more convenient
ReplyDeleteI agree with alyssa we do a similar thing now by asking our friends so why should we have to go on a site to get notes.Ms.Merraro say something about how thamil could not use his ipod to take pictures of the notes...
ReplyDelete@Stephanie and Janat I agree with you both because the notes could be wrong. Even if you trust the people who wrote them to tell the truth you never know. And it's fine to share it with your friends but taking it from people is just not right.
ReplyDelete@ heli would you count it as lazy what if the person didn't finish copying the notes and need the rest.
ReplyDeleteIf it counted as cheating then why would they allow the students to use it? they have thought it through and decided if they should let them use it or not.
@ Stephanie, i agree with you because if you just buy the answers you never really know if there right or wrong and you would just go take a chance foe it like in the cheater, all of them take it and don't think about getting in trouble but some people back out like katie which is good but not as much because why would she take the cheating way.
ReplyDelete@ stephanie the reason thamil couldn't use his ipod to take pictures was because of "privacy" issues that might happen at school when she was discussing it to her colleague.
ReplyDelete@Heli like it said in the article, some of the people who use the notes have missed a class because of an appointment. But these are university students. They should know that if you miss a class, whatever the reason is, you catch up on what you missed from your teacher or friends. We are told to do that now in grade 8 and it's what you do in high school. So university students should do the same don't you think?
ReplyDelete@Sharpshooter1984, maybe thamil couldn't use his iPod because it was the school's law not to bring in any electronics, and besides thamil's going to high school in two years and in high school you take a lot of notes and they don't allow you to use iPod's to help you finish, take it the old fancy way and write it.
ReplyDelete@ jan this is entirely different from cheater they got the answers from someone, I think sarah mentioned that someone gave her the answers when she was at the library.
ReplyDeleteAlso they didn't buy the answers it was emailed huge differences when buying something like notes online they're going to check by people rating how goods the notes are or not like a 5 stars for excellent or 0 for unreliable
@Alyssa and Janat yes because a single number can cause you to get the question wrong.Example when i was copying down the notes for music i had changed 1 number and that number could have cost me a mark but i fixed it before the quiz
ReplyDelete@Stephanie, i agree one little mistake get cost you the whole test, because one time in a math test i showed my work did everything write, but my answer was wrong and it got me a less mark which i could have gotten better.
ReplyDelete@ sharpshooter
ReplyDeleteya, like you have to take notes for the whole day, and if you miss it for whatever reason,it's your job to catch up.you always have a friend who you can trust more then a stranger. And if the friend can't help there is always the teacher, that's only possible if your away or something.
well, not everyone will think this as cheating...
@ talwinder the sight is mostly designed for university students he would have to do it the old way or there can be notes on it he can buy.
ReplyDelete@ alyssa in university that way won't work; it's not as effective as it is in the lower grades so they put the notes up there if they do like that they would be wasting a lot of time hence need to catch up even more.
@Talwinder same with me I wrote the wrong number and got the question wrong even though I showed my work and everything. So you can't always trust the notes given if they are on the Internet and you don't know who gave them.
ReplyDelete@ heli it is my job to catch up but what I'm saying is I am catching up by buying the notes if i wanted to. I can trust my friend but what I'm saying is when buying the notes there is always going to be ways to see if it is trust worthy or not like ratings or the people in charge of the site go over it and see if it can be posted.
ReplyDeleteGoing to the teacher isn't the only solution you're going to have to be independent sometimes and learn for your self. The teachers aren't always helpful cause they will have different personality seeing if they are judgmental or not.
@ alyssa i agree with you.
ReplyDelete@ there sharpshooter, some of the people who use the notes have missed a class because of an appointment.it for them and for the people
but like it said in one of the responses, a university professor said if for the students that don't finish for whatever reason, not for laziness.
@ heli thats what i mean
ReplyDelete@sharpshooter1948 , i know they don't really relate but i was thinking about it :P
ReplyDeleteand sharpshooter, if your friends make you buy the noted you have to catch up on whatever was missed, then thats not really an nice friend
@talwinder yes that true but if you didnt show your work then you would have gotten a zero on that question but by showing your work you still get some marks.
ReplyDeleteGetting notes from someone you know is fine but over the internet i say is not ok because you can be paying the person and they can be giving you the wrong notes and you would not know till you do a test or find out from someone.
@sharpshooter I guess it doesn't work that way but I still think taking the notes of the Internet is wrong.
ReplyDeleteOops I meant off
ReplyDeleteThe only way getting notes is cheating when you use it on projects/tests & more. Yes I think that if they missed the class or whatever that they should keep up but sometimes it is very difficult and notes are better. There can be days were you miss class and maybe even asking friends may not give you the whole story, example if I were to ask someone what he/she said, the probably would not remember everything and tell me only some. So I think it is sharing and not cheating
ReplyDelete@ Alyssa
ReplyDeleteYou don't get the notes from random people, they already know what you are doing in the class. If you were sick and you needed to know everything that happened in class wouldn't you want some notes to keep you on task?
@ alyssa i don't see how it is wrong the notes that are up there are from people that post it up there so that other people can see to also so that they can make some money
ReplyDeleteYeah but it's someone else's work that your taking. I don't know, just the whole idea of taking someone else's notes from the Internet seems wrong.
ReplyDelete@sharpshooter, someone can put the wrong notes and all the people who used them and spent their money on them and then they fail, so thats not really reilable
ReplyDeleteWell I think this is helping students because students that are under stress in class cannot concentrate during class because proboly they are busy in other work or too much work. This is also for slackers because maybe they don't like to do work at school because they like the comfort of home so thins is handy. As long as they just use the notes for studying and not cheating.
ReplyDeleteI think its fair that they have to pay for the notes because you got to pay a price for your edcuation and also the person that is putting the notes has to spend money on printing it because of the ink or paper. So I think this is just sharing, not sharing.
@Alyssa It's ok to take someone elses notes because if there is a price of it then its alright. Also if it's legal in their university then it's ok. But you make a good point it's fells like someone is taking your homework or anything else and just copying it. It's plagiarism. But plagiarism is taking someones work without asking. But this is different because the person who put the notes on the internet allowed people to use those notes but comes with a price.
ReplyDeleteI see no problem with this because the student will still need to verify or research the notes if their real or fake. So they still learn when they catch a mistake in the notes. So I really don't see a problem with this.
ReplyDelete@prayas It does come with a price but if you put your notes up on the Internet that you worked fairly hard on and only get $1.50 out of it? Yes it's something but it's not much. And I would like to know how you get the money? Is it sent to you by email or cheque because if you don't know how you get the money, why would you put your notes up there?
ReplyDelete@Prayas but how do you know if there's a mistake in the notes? If you weren't there for the class, you don't know what was spoken so you can't verify if it's true or not. And if you're getting your notes from the Internet, you trust them to be true but there could be some false information in them but you will not know.
ReplyDelete@Brown_kid but sometimes student think when they have it done the first time they dont need to check it over. And if they miss the class then how are thry going to relize that the notes that they have are fake.A simple mistake in a note could be they have 1 number in the date wrong and some people dont reconize small things like that until someone point it out to them.
ReplyDelete@ Alyssa im trying to say some activities on the computer can be like notes, like google, sometimes i get my notes from there like is that a problem?? what im trying to say is that there could be some teachers out there who post the notes for the students to use, and also there are other sites that have notes and yet they are legal sites.
ReplyDelete@ jan101 i get that part but like someone could of just put them on the internet, like plenty of students send it to eachother. And let me just put a general question out there but,if most of you guys say sharing notes is cheating then why do teacher make notes for us,and if someone wants to borrow it is it cheating because your still learning the samething??
ReplyDelete@Vanessa what do you mean getting your notes off google? So you take someone elses notes or write your own?
ReplyDeleteAnd how do you know who posted the notes? What if it's anonymous and you don't know if your teacher posted them or not? And I don't think a teacher would be posting notes. They don't care if you miss a class because you're the one paying to go to school. And they'll also probably be too busy. So I don't think a teacher would be posting notes.
@ alyssa when buying things online it would got towards your online account which you can withdraw from anytime and you get sent a check. Your buying with you credit card so it charges that
ReplyDeleteIt's sharing, but it's unfair. There's students that need financial support with their education. When other students are more wealthy, they can use it to their advantage further than just having something like a laptop. This money can extend to buying notes so they don't have to study.
ReplyDeleteI think it's something that could be used occasionally, like when someone's sick.If they use it all the time and not pay attention in class,it's something that they should take away.People should treat education as a gift.
@ alyssa you not getting it off Google the schools allow you to use it so there is a website. The website is probably approved. The reason they charge so little is that if they charge you more it would be to expensive it's notes.
ReplyDeleteBuying notes can be treated as ''survival of the finest'' too.If others have an unfair advantage? Do the people with the advantage really care? The world isn't fair from the beginning,so note sharing is just another way to be better than others.
ReplyDelete@Gurinder I agree. It's good for like if you're sick or something but if you're just lazy and aren't paying attention, it shouldn't be used. Education is very important but some people don't understand that.
ReplyDeleteI think that this is a great idea, because there are so many advantages towards it. I do not consider it cheating because its just notes, its exactly what you would do, but it saves time. It's just like a textbook, those who write it put a lot of effort into it, and we use them as guidelines. Same thing with the notes, people put effort and write them, and we then use them through this site. The co-founder stated that the bad notes that are posted do not get bought, and this will encourage people writing high quality notes. The price sounds good too, considering textbooks alone costs a mere $300 (Around that). Also it's a website, for ultimate convenience. Even though this kind of thing exists, I would not use it unless I really have to because if you write your own notes, then it'd be easier to study them, that is the whole point of note-taking. When you write something, you already know a few of the things you write.
ReplyDeleteAnother thing is that studying from a textbook would be considered cheating; reason you didn't write it you have to buy it from someone you don't know how can you trust that then?
ReplyDelete@Sharpshooter yeah ok so Google is an approved site but I still think it's stealing. Of course, if you put your notes up there, you WANT people to take them, but not everyone is nice. They could keep the write notes and write notes that are wrong to put up there. If you weren't there, you would never know, buy them and then fail a test while this other person gets the money. It may seem crazy and why would anyone do that but it's possible.
ReplyDelete@ Gurinder, Financially troubled students do not go to university if they cannot afford it, unless they have a scholarship, but then again, North America is capitalistic society, the winners keep winning and the losers keep losing. Those who have money can afford that, and that's how maybe they become successful in their studies and they'll most likely end up with a good job. So then it is an unfair advantage, but so is society, A majority of this society is unfair, a lot of people have the upper hand, this is just one of the millions of unfair advantages in North America.
ReplyDelete@ Sharpshooter
ReplyDeleteWell, the Co-founder said that those notes that were not well-written don't make that much money, so then that encourages higher quality note-taking. You can trust them because it is a site that university students have come to trust, you may be sceptical now, but when you go to university, you'll be looking for stuff like this, because note-taking will be the highlight of your day in University.
@ alyssa what I'm trying to say is that when you post the notes up there it might be checked over, also when buying things online there will also be rating for things to see if is trust worthy or not the people that bought it before will most likely rate the user or the notes before you buy them.
ReplyDeleteIt should show how right before you buy the notes. Like you see the notes but there will be a rating beside it.
@ talha i didn't say i was againts it i was stating that with the notes there will be ways so that you can find out which ones you can trust.

@Sharshooter Ok you make your point that most of the notes up there would be trustworthy. But it's still unfair. I think that if you're sick that it's ok to use but not if you're lazy. It's a good idea but I just don't like it. I think that it's stealing.
