I think that since the Building was going to collapse, the stairwell fell apart and there was no way to go down the building, and that would be the end of Will and his father
I think the sound was the building collapsing...Maybe one half of the building is slowly tilting,and it's about to fall off and crush everything beneath it.
well i think it could be the firefighters but it depends what time it is when they hear the noise because it could be parts of there buildings falling down...

i agree with alyssa but u know how the stairs end and there is a transfer to a next set of stairs.i think that there are people who are injured/traped and will and john help them to get to the firefighters.
i dont think its really the end of them , maybe somehow they'll find a way out or fel themselves falling down but not dying because will is the main character and its his veiw in the book so if its the end then who telling the story
I think the sound that Will and John heard was parts of the building falling. Maybe the ceiling and/or walls were falling down because of the plane crash.
I do not think that it is the building collapsing because if a building was collapsing, it wouldn't just be a sound but there would be shaking and crashing and lots more commotion than just a sound. That is just my thoughts.
I think the sound was a person hanging off the building screaming for their life because the stairs from the bottem were broken and were starting to collapes so maybe someone was hanging from the stairs.
just consider and remember: the tower John and Will are in is the tower that collapses first, the towers show no signs of collapse even moments before they actually fall
ohhh ithink that they hred the either the fire spreading and then the tower was going to fall of firefighter who were starting to make there way up the staires
@steph fire doesnt really make so much noise but people smell it and then wont his father and will feel the haet lke they did at each door , and maybe the tower was falling piece by peice then it will totally all fall in the end
I still think that it is firefighters climbing the stairs because they can't take the elevators and if they want to help the people above, they have to climb the stairs therefore hearing them climb up the stairs seems logical in my opinion. They could also hear someone else who is hurt on one of the floors yelling for help. I know the buildings don't show signs of collapse before they fall but John and Will are fast and I don't think that the building is going to fall now.
The collapse of the buildings sound like a nightmare all those people going to work thinking its anither ordinary day but ending up in something like hell and the firefighters going up to save people dying to it gives me the creeps knowing all of this is real
now since we read it i think the voices they heard were of the firefighters climbing up the flights of stairs to go and retrive anyone else stuck up above. (vioces of heros-who risk thier lives to save others)
the collapse of the buildings...was like no one at that point was going to survive,it was like...not right.But when the firefighters went upit made me think..what if they dont come down??and it must of been like hell for them.
I think they heard an echo from farther down the stairwell. Maybe firefighters or paramedics climbing up.

they probobly heard the others down under yelling " WERE / IM GUNNA DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!"
