Civil War / Jot notes

Good Morning Team!

I dont have a fear of heights...I do howerever have a fear of dfalling from heights.

We have just finished our first detailed lesson on taking effective jot notes and the importance of keeping them organized and focused to support your understanding of new topics.  Our lecture on the Southern justifications on Slavery was indepth and interesting.

We will have a Jot Notes Quiz on Tuesday.  You will be given a lecture from the civil war and asked to take "notes" for the first 15 minutes.  I will collect the notes and evaluate looking for organization, underlining of key points and clear sub catagories.

The topic of that lecture will be John Brown and his role in the Civil War.  You can do some research and post findings in the blog to support your understanding of the lecture.  It will be helpful to have background knowledge before listening.

So share what you learn about John Brown (make sure you have the right one)

  2. John Brown was an abolisinist meaning he was a freedom fighter for slaves. Some time Browns actions were extreme and some would describe his actions as patriotic treason. He was unlike other northeners because John Brown advocated a violent approach to the abbolition of slavery opposed to a peaceful one. He is also famous for his unsuccesful raid at Harpers ferry.

Brown and six men defend themselves in an engine-house, and continued to fight until Brown was seriously wounded.

Within 36 hours of the attack, most of Brown's men had been killed or captured.

  19. Canada's Role

Canada, although not a country yet was most influenced by the Civil War and growing unrest in the United States.

Remember Canada had been a safe place for freed slaves, so a southern or Confederate victory in the war was a big Canadian concern.

The Civil War was a critical factor in Canada being formed 2 years later in 1867. Worries and uncertainty about the United States propelled Canada to act and become a Nation. One that would have clear rights and rules of Law to negotiate and show solidarity and strength towards America.

Remember America was expanding...although west it was possible they could expand north if Canada did not become a nation
