Black History Assembly The Movie All Blocks

Hello Team,

I want this post for updates from each section.  They should be daily.  This way I can be updated but you can communicate with other block leaders to maintain the consistency and flow from block to block.

We will hav to have a few "slaves" as characters that go from block to block.  Beginning when they are captured and ending when they are free.

This will be the biggest and most complex task you have faced as a class.  Big group projects are difficult but ultimately the most rewarding.  Don't forget the lessons of the can food drive.  There will be highs and lows in production but if we remain true to the task and motivated to tell an essential story then we will be successful.

A Blessing to Our Mission!

1. only the group leader from each of the 6 sections will post here.

2. each Block will need to pick the art work to display in start of your scene (get the info on citing it as a reference for the film credits)  copy the link address

3. summary of block

4. write script and detail action (yes action scenes need to be scripted)

5. story board the blocks.  From shot to shot.  This may mean 10-30 mini sketches detailing the action and camera angles and shots.

6. Narrator voice to go over the photo art work introduction (a character from the scene or historical figure we have studied)

  3. i was thinking that we could have a scene with slave catchers and their dogs going through a forest looking for escaped slaves while the slaves are running there at night.

  5. So far,it seems as if I'll be doing block 2 as a solo. For the artwork, the image that ends the 2nd block (on the boat) would be the Amistad illustration. For the image in the beginning of block 2,maybe it could be a student-illustrated piece of work.

For the summary,as I had posted in my own block:''After being captured, the scene transitions to the opening credits or whatever, and then it goes into the boat scene. The slave wakes up in a boat, and is thinking in his head.A few sentences in his head, and then he breaks free of one of the handcuffs,he frees all the slaves, the boat reaches the coast and then the slaves fight the owners. It will be the slaves positioning about to attack, then the scene ends to avoid violence.

For the script,I think it should be put along with the 10-30 small blocks that show each camera angle/close in...Like the script on 2/3 of the page's width, and beside it each drawing.

After that,BLOCK 2 should be finished, and we can start revising. ''

  6. we are amung done brainstorming we have a hanful of great ideas we can use and incorperate we sould start writing the script and roles of who is goin to do what

  7. Great idea Gurinder but this is going to be tough to film. lets go for the more stoic approach. with no break for freedom as most slave trips were without incident. Lets keep it real in the sense that breaking free from their captors was not easy or common. Lets instead show the pain and suffering of being crammed into boats and treated like total dirt. This can be shot on the stage with greater ease. and I will get some people to help with this scene

    What ideas Adam?

  8. As well all groups should have reported in this block. Thus I am missing reports from 3 groups.

We need to maximize time and follow instruction. We don't want to waste time making sure things are getting done. The three blocks that have not completed the instructions should do so. This is the block leaders responsibility. You must select a leader that will complete the daily and essential tasks.

  11. 2 groups is fine...but don't stretch yourself so far that you can't commit fully to either one

  12. (Block 5's so far events)

So lets see so far we got.... We start the first scene at night say around thamils backyard, Harriot comes and tells 5 slaves come with me were escaping this place. Next scene will be by the stream where 5 slaves will appear walking with Harriot on one side of the stream in the snowy cold. When they will hear sounds of horse's stomping and coming their way. So they deside to hide behind a large tree that's behind bushes. The hunters will hear sounds of something walking, they get of their horses and have a dog start sniffing around. Thats the cue for the slaves to start crawling away. The sent has gone away and the hunters are back on their horses, the pass away from the slaves. Next scene the slaves run to thamil's backyard (another spot) thats where we cut. More to come .....

  13. sounds great but filming horses will be impossible, but the dogs sniffing seems doable if we can find a dog!

  14. Does anybody have a dog we could use for the movie ? (Pet)

    ReplyDelete
  15. We could have Horse hooves noises I think you can do that on Imovie.

so far we are going to use the library for the stabe for the auction scene the we were going to print out posters and put then up so that in our movie we can show then.the slves can be tied up with rope and either be standing on the stge but to the side of in a different room then we bring then in.

  17. Let's find some information and video on the slave auctions

    We want to be accurate

  18. our scene takes place in the ravine by the bridge, the street and a little bit around the school,it starts of in the ravine where we find the slave walking to the streetjust as he/she aproches the street he/she sees two thugs facingthe other side of the bridge blocking it off for slaves. just as the slave sneeks on the street behind the thugs quietly, the slave trips and falls down, the thugs turn around , and just as the slave makes a break for it the thugs start chasing him/her and the chase begins. thats just the beginning, we have the rest bust its all broken up into smaller indevidual shots, of the slave being chased on the street, our team knows about that. than the slaves run into what today is the kindergarden entrance area for mrs furlan and mrs cohen's class , and 2 more thugs pop up blocking off the pathway to the eastern parking lotand the original two thugs that were chasing the slave block of the other pathway which leads to the schools main enterance thus blocking off all possible escapes for the slave, and as all for slaves start to close in on the slave and captures him/her, beats him/her and maybe one thug can say," this one can do good in the auction" than then it breaks of into the montage of slaves being captured maybe for the auction, by the way as i was writing this i came up with how we can tag the capture scene to the auction scene. what do you think.

    ReplyDelete
  19. this is a site that shows us posters for the slave auction-http://www.google.ca/images?hl=en&gbv=2&tbs=isch%3A1&sa=1&q=slave+auctions+posters&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=

  20. parking lots and classrooms??? this is not the type of environments slaves were captured from in the 1850s...this slave capturing needs further research, again it has to be accurate. These ideas are great but very much from a modern perspective. Lets research and come up with authentic capture scenes. The bridge scene sounds good but the school etc seem a bit to modern.

As well team leaders please email the the art work that will open up your scene

  21. As well the capture scene flows into opening credits and then the boat scene.

    ReplyDelete
  22. i also founda video they were lost but this io ones fits what we r doing

  23. @Mr.Cheney ya you are right sorry my head is still in the 1950's from all those king episodes :P

    ReplyDelete
  24. @mr.cheney for our opening oicture its going to be the site i posted showing lots of posters for the auction

    ReplyDelete
  25. we want a artist picture that we can duplicate with a photo of us depicting the art.

start with the artist picture and blend into a student photo that is as similar as possible...then into the scene...keep that in mind when selecting a painting.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes the King movie leaves a lasting impression...just go back in time 100 years. Check out Amistad for great authentic ideas. They have capture scene in the movie. (you can find on youtube)

    ReplyDelete
  27. (Group 5)
We could use sound effects for the horses stopming

    ReplyDelete
  28. Im reporting from group 6 road to freedom we have picked out our picture and are currently working on the content of the scene a member of my group would like to know the names of the slaves so he can get started on the script. What do you guys think I got one name it could be fredrick because of fredrick douglas but his last name could be benjamin.

    ReplyDelete
  29. lets research some real slaves who got their freedom on the underground railway.

lets use them as our characters...find me 3 names please and a brief summary of their lives! anybody up for this research?

    ReplyDelete
  30. @Mr Cheney We could use a cardboard background with wood-like lines and patterns pretending its wooden, and we could add some oceanic effects so we can show its the boat. At the moment, our group is just about to start writing the script. We've got the main idea of what is going to happen in block 2.The script will be finished by me.

    for the art....

    http://afrocityblog.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/slave-ship-2.jpg

This would be the opening part.We could use the set of stairs and pretend that the slaves are going down the boat lobby.
