From your perspective this is a fact and will make you happy BUT lets view this from the other perspective. Put yourself in charge of the school and listen to this situation:
Two students show up for school wearing clothing that are disturbingly offensive. The young man is wearing a shirt that is making fun of people of colour (any colour) along with a picture of a man giving the middle finger on the back and says "this is what I think of school"
Another young lady is wearing equally offensive clothing. A shirt that is verbally abusive towards homosexuality. Then on her hat there is an image of a girl smoking a joint and a catch phrase that says "lets go have fun"
Now you are the Principal and you are informed by the homeroom teachers about this clothing. The teachers do not know what action to take because the dress code has been recently terminated by a student vote. What do you do if anything? what are the long term consequences in the school for whatever action you take what do you wish you had done before hand to prevent this situation?
What I would do is I would change the rule to appropriate clothing then send them home to change there clothes and give them detention because they know that its not cool to where such offensive clothing at school and i would ask them if they would like someone to where a shirt saying im with a bad word or 2 with a picture of them
ReplyDeletei would just change the dress code to appropriate clothing and like master chief said send them home since the clothes would be offensive and call an emergency assembaley to talk to the students about the way they are dressed.
ReplyDeleteI would make them go home and change .. because this is not a appropriate situwation .. i would also still let them still wear no uniform except for those students who had dis-obeyed the rule .. so in otherwords they would have to start wearing uniform because they had not worn Suitable clothing that was given .. so they had lost thier trust of wearing non-uniform clothing .. there punishement is wearing a dress code or uniform of blue, white, and black
ReplyDeletei would say that you have to wear appropriate clothing and that if they wear such inappropriate clothing again there will be consequences. i would also tell them to go home and change into appropriate clothing because what they are wearing is offensive.
ReplyDeleteI would have made them go home and change and also have gave them detention because they would learn their lesson not to wear in approptiate clothing and i would also make a rule that you cant wear clothing that sends a bad message or offends someone. I would also send letters home saying that there should be appropritate clothing at school.
ReplyDeleteI agree Talwinder but what if everyone starts wearing offensive clothes but they dont think so the dress code is just gong to go back to normal
ReplyDeleteAs principal i would firstly send those students in question home and inform there parents of their childs Odious behavior towards groups of people and school and would have the child A disciplined to show other students that this behavior in clothing chioce will not be tolerated and i will B enforce a new rule saying that offensive clothing is unaceptable at _____ school.
ReplyDeleteif i were the principal i would of talked to the student, and make sure they dont wear something like that again by makeing the rule appropriate clothing and send them home for them to change !
ReplyDeleteI would have an assembly about it and would bring two of said above qualified students and display it to the school, and say " If this is what's happening, then lets not let it happen!" and them I would lecture them about wearing appropriate clothing, and apparently give them a P.A. day to get things together along with a letter from school telling that to wear appropriate clothing. Also there will be new criteria, Pants have to be atleast covering the knees, and tops no lower then just above the waistline. Consequences will be severe as the examples that are given from Mr. Cheney describe Racism and openly opposing Sexual Orientation. For racism, I got this from the planner, The consequences are from 1-30 days of suspension, not including detention and the like.
ReplyDelete@Alyssa what if only a few students dis-obeyed the order will there be consequences for all the students or only the ones who wore the unappropriate clothing ?
ReplyDeleteIf i was the principal and there were kids wearing offensive clothing, I would of sent them home and told them to change. If the students werent able to go home and change, i would keep them in the office for the whole day. I would only keep them in the office if it was a school with little kids, i wouldnt want parents calling the school complaining about their kids learning bad things.
ReplyDeleteI'd send a letter home to each family ,and informational letter that would inform the parents about the recent change and concequences that have occured so far.A persuasive letter might change the dress code.Long term consequences could be like a hatred for school,a bad name for the staff, and and uproar from the student body.Newcomers to the school could be steered away from the school;leading to less learning opportunities for others. The teachers could be treated in a different manner.A rude and offensive manner. This could lead to vandalism and physical and verbal assualt. The uproar from the students could lead to an outrageous protest,or even riot. It's to dangerous to do anything, and too dangerous NOT to do anything.
ReplyDeleteActions like not giving them an option to terminate the dress code but add an option of having a tertiary colour might've appealed to the audience.
I would put up a list of what shouldn't be on the clothing such as inappropriate words or pictures, or there will be consequences like if people take advantage of the appropriate clothing policy then I will change the policy and make it dress code or uniform.
ReplyDeleteyea i agree with talwinder and if everyone starts wearing offensive clothes then we'd have uniform/dress code again ...........
ReplyDeletewhat i would do is send the student back home to change. i would still let them wear no uniform but they have to wear something that is appropriate. i would also send a note home saying that they have to wear appropriate clothing everyday. but still if no one is going to follow the rule then i would think about changing no uniforms to uniforms so that the school will have a proper dress code and everyone will have to wear the uniform. this is what i think i would do.
ReplyDelete@gurinder if students to begin with oppose the uniform adding a tertiary colour wont make a real diffrence.
ReplyDeleteIf i were the principal i would definitly call the studnts parents home na dtell them about the inapproriate way their child was dressing in and i would also definatly set up a rule on appropriate clothing such as no abusing language and no clothing piece that discriminates another religon, group, person etc.
ReplyDeletethe long term consequences are that because of the offensive and inopropriate clothing students could learn to deal drugs or even join gangs and the school reputation could go down just because of clothing. What I had wished to do before hand would have been to set up a approperiate clothing rule.
@nida i agree with part of what you said, that you would send letters home. that is a good idea to let parents know what is going on. but i do not think giving them detention will change the way the student thinks. i think you should give them a job to do like pick up trash outside at recess. that will make them think twice about wearing innappropriate clothes to school because they dont want to do something like that again.
ReplyDeletethats why you ask for wearing apropreate clothing thatswhen you can wear clothing that doesnt have those kind of language an graphics and plus i think that our generation is more mature and are smart enough not to wear that kind of clothing to school, let aalone a public area
ReplyDelete@ master chief what do you mean by wear a shirt with im with a bad word? and are you sure that will work what will you do if it didnt work?
ReplyDeleteIf that happend i would tell the whole school that's exactly not what you are suppose to wear and i would make the children wear thier shirts inside out and tell the school that if it happend again they will have to wear uniforms again and the person who wore the clothing would get suspended.
ReplyDeletewhat i would do is change the rule to appropriate clothing and tell them to change their clothes. i would make them explain to me why they wore offensive cloths. also i would give them lines to write because if i give them detention sometimes people don't realize what they did wrong.
ReplyDeletenida i think sending letters home to everyone would be a good idea.
@last post Not audience, the electors my bad
ReplyDeleteIf i were the principal I would definitly call the studnts parents and complain...... More will come Out of time
ReplyDelete@Alyssa, i think giving them punishment like picking up trash outside is to mean because they probably didn't know that they couldn't wear clothing like that.
