Random Thoughts 2

Hello Team,

Our uniform debate was lively.  I appreciate your passion for what you want to wear.

I want to make a connection between the main idea of Rebound and your strong voice on uniform.

We concluded that Rebounds main idea was "not to judge a book by its cover."  This seems like a solid a fair assessment.  And seemingly it came from our outsider perspective.

When the debate about uniform got heated the argument became that you were being denied an opportunity to express your self.

but doesn't it seem a bit telling how our ideas and perspectives change when talking about you or somebody else.  Let me explain.

We want to dress our way to show people who we are, right?   Thus we want people to "judge us" and thus focus on our appearance.  So if we are talking about us then we want to be judged as long as we control how we are to be judged.

So doesn't arguing that you want to wear what you like play against what you argued when you read Rebound?  In the context of the book you are against Judging a book by its cover but for your reality you want to create your cover so that you will be judged (just the way you want to).

Thus the lesson learned in Rebound has not gone beyond the text.

This is just a perspective - it is not right or the truth, it is rather an observation.

  1. It is very true of an observation, in my opinion. We have not taken the lessons from the book, when they were very beneficial to us, and we took a blind faith towards not wearing uniform, and thus, we had said something, and said another thing opposing it. I quote that we said one of the main ideas were "not to judge a book by its cover", and as Mr Cheney said " we want people to "judge us" and thus focus on our appearance." and also "In the context of the book you are against Judging a book by its cover but for your reality you want to create your cover so that you will be judged (just the way you want to)". I thought that these remarks were the most powerful because they acknowledge how we actually think, from one subject to another, and we do not capture what we learn, to use it in life. But that is what school is for! Learning for life. Rebound taught us many morals, and what good is it if we do not use them?

  2. Well to me uniform is not to judge a book by its cover. I dont think when people see you in uniform they think that your well mannered and tidy or whatever. Also i dont think when people dont wear uniform , the students are just clumsy and do whatever they want.

  3. sometimes people don't care about the personalities of the person but only what they wear, what they look like and/or what relligion. the thought of that is just so stupid to think that you don't like a person just because of their colour or style of clothing or relligion

  4. uniform would make it difficult to pass judgement...you would have to learn about peoples personalities, values, etc

  5. i dont think that our argument on uniform goes against our argument on Rebound because when the argument on uniform started people were saying that we should wear what we want so that we could be indivisual. if every book in the world had the same cover people wouldnt like to read them because they all looked the same and thats how uniform makes us feel.

  6. i just like not wearing uniform because it like freedom ,freedom of whatever you want to wear... and i agree with pamela.

  7. I always judge a book by its cover, and I'm not proud of it always. For all we know,a nice person you know could be a bandit,a serial killer or an identity thief.A nice person could be the best person you've ever met in your life,or a person who will save you.Judging a book by its cover can save lives,or throw you into misery and depression.Losing opportunities.

For uniform,I need to look like someone who is competent.Wearing uniform doesn't tell if you're a pompous fool,or the most majestic and graceful being on the planet.Being able to choose clothes that you'd like to wear is the same thing.Someone can dress up as something they're not just for friends or to look like they are worth talking to,or some other attempt for attention.

In my opinion,I just wear what the school tells me to wear, but customize it as much as I can (without falling in trouble) to my liking.People will judge you by the cover, just because its almost involuntary.

  8. yea true but not that i want people to judge me by what i wear but i do want a choice of what to wear . some people do judge people of what they wear ,what there religion is or what colour they are but its thier choice and its wrong if they are

  9. its not neseseraly that im speaking more for everyone is that you cant judge a person by what they where or what they do you can only get an unacurate opinion because if you dont know that person you cant judge them. there could be a guy thats dressind in a baggy old coat and run down shoes but that doesnt mean hes a loser, once you get to know him for all you know he could be a really cool guy example david, you could think that hes a guy in a wheelchair that doesnt really do much but i think we can all agree of what davids personallity really is and the only person that can really understand that is sean so Mr cheney what do you have to say about that???

  10. Even if youre wearing dress code people stioll judge you like saying oh youre clothes are cheap his sweaters ugly and all sorts of stuff people will never stop judging each other even if youre not wearing clothes

    ReplyDelete
  11. even though i don't like it, i judge the book the cover. it not good because you wouldn't be able to explore and see what other books are like. the only way you do that is by watch the movie that is based on the book.just like on the person a book has to be liked by how the storyline goes and the stroyline is the personality of the book so you have to see the storyline of the person

  12. Yes I agree we all judge books by its covers...its easy and likely human nature. To not do so takes a real awareness.

@Manga...if all the covers are the same then exactly you cant judge a book by its cover. I think you have proven my point not the other.

@ Adam im not sure what your point is that you want me to contend? please restate

  13. nobody wants to be judged badly i mean to say that nobody wants to be treated in a way that they be laughed and as you said wearing anything his that you want to be judged well yeah we want to be judged but in a way nobody laughs at you or show pity to you

    ReplyDelete
  14. i say that if people should not judge a book by its cover then they should not judge people by what they dress or wear. i also agree with sami and pamela uniform is just a way to hide your freedom and spirt. if students have to wear uniform or dress code then why shouldent our teachers.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Teachers do have a dress code.

but if we wont judge people by what they wear then why must we worry about what we wear? aren't we looking to be judged? Thus we only validate judging.

    ReplyDelete
  16. what is teachers dress code. the school has a dress code because then kids wont judge kids on what they are wearing. but if no kid is a bad kid and wont be mean on what other kids are wearing then we dont need a dress code.

  17. School uniforms spare kids and their parents the time consuming, troublesome ordeal of picking out a set of clothes every day. During the rushed morning hours before school, picking out the right set of clothes is a major head pain.

With everyone dressed alike, there is a hope that kids will judge others based on character instead of the clothes they wear. School uniforms can save parents a lot of money as they then only need to buy their kids casual clothes to wear on the weekends. Otherwise, parents need to constantly replenish their teenager's wardrobe with the latest fashions, which can be very expensive. Uniforms are a special money saver during the growing years, when kids outgrow their clothes every few months.

While bullying may not stop, use of uniforms at least prevents students who aren't dressed fashionably or according to the latest trends, from getting picked on for their choice of clothes. They also need to keep an eye out for inappropriate signs on the clothes, such as slogans for alcohol and cigarettes, and symbols such as the Nazi symbol or inappropriate language. It promotes more safety on school soil as well as on field trips.

  18. @Prayas what a detailed and insightful response, you mention a variety of issues and support them with evidence.

The connection towards bullying is great. Uniform can often hide inequalities amongst students because all must wear the same clothes. The opportunity for students to show off with new and expensive clothes is minimized. This plays into the shallowness of many who look to superficial things like "cost" to judge, form peer groups, and thus bully less fortunate

  19. I agree with gurinder, you judge the book by its cover of how the person is feeling or how they are expressed, but when i comes to uniforn or clothing you give them complements or tips how to dress better or so forth ..

    ReplyDelete
  20. well mr cheney then its fair. if the students dont have to wear uniform then the teachers should not have to wear uniform but in that case if we did have to wear uniform then should the teachers have to wear uniform to. if the teachers dont have to wear then that just shows how unfair the school is.

i agree if you should not judge a person by what they are wearing then they should not be judge by what we are wearing.but in some cases some people do judge you by what you wear.Ex... when you are outside during lunch alot of people judge you on what you wear ike if your coat is bright blue.but some people dont judge you by your clothes. they get to know you before they judge you but i say if your judging a person by complimenting then then its ok but if your being mean then its not good to judge them at all.

btw did you mark my rebound main idea

  21. @stephanie i dont think the same applies here teachers dont necessarily have the same problems that students may have for example teachers most likely wont bully another teacher if they arent wearing the latest clothing but the same doesnt apply to students so you for everyone who believs teahcers should wear uniforms the same solutions dont appear twice students arent the same as teachers so they cant be dealt with the same way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Stephanie, El Presidente reminds us of one very important point. teachers and students have very different roles to play in a school environment. To assume one needs to do what the other needs to do is believing that teachers and students share the same expectations, responsibilities, etc .

Ultimately teachers are in charge and Principals in charge of teachers. The level of responsibility and accountability goes far beyond just having to do your homework.

So although I would not say "No" to wearing a uniform (and again you are not wearing a uniform to school) I do not agree that I have to because students have to.

    ReplyDelete
  23. but Mr. President

bullying happens everywhere! and with teachers it is no different.

    ReplyDelete
  24. @mrcheny i agree but its most likely not for the same reasons like not having the latest clothing ( correct me if im wrong) thats the point im trying to get across.

  25. @nida, do you supprt what yur saying?
and when writing make it more clear for thers to understand plzzzzzzz!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I dont think that judging someone by what they wear infers to teachers because we already know who they are and how there act towards the students. Thats my opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @cheney my point is that you cant judge a person by what they wear or what they do if you dont now the person you cant judge. most pple on an average from my point of view dress to get a good vibe on that first judge its like the saying "dress for success" then get to now the person then you can really judge. thats what i mean

  29. i agree with stephanie we go to school, and HAVE to wear the same colours as everyone else but thats so boring and teachers dont have to also teachers get PAID we are the ones who have to wear the dresscode.not that i want to be paid to come to school but it is really unfair and bullying can happen to anyone and anywhere

    ReplyDelete
  30. @ Pamela .. your right .. teachers and students take a diffrent role in the school, we came to learn and they came to teach us .. so they have the right not to wear uniforn or a dress code ..

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree with pamela that not wearing uniforms judge us by they way we dress.. but if we wear uniform then people wouldnt judge us by what we wear but by what our personalitys are like.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Jan101

the fact that teachers are paid only further highlights that students and teachers have very different roles t play in schools

  33. you wouldn't be able to get any friends, and so you would become a loner and wouldn't be able to sit with anyone that are in your class.trust me i've bin through it

    ReplyDelete
  34. @EL PRESIDENTE what you are saying is Correct because most students don't have the latest trend because maybe their parents are having troubles with their job so maybe they do not have enough cash to be on the latest trend.

    ReplyDelete
  35. jan101 my point was that students and teachers arent the same you cant uphold the same standards for the two thats like saying a mouse and a cat are the same when they clearly arent.

    ReplyDelete
  36. judging someone on what they wear is like telling them that their personality is not good enough or it is just stupid.i wear someone things that people judge me on and it is not that nice because i like what i wear.so it seems like what you wear is not enough to make yourself un-judgeable,so some people dress inapropirately that gets themselves noticed.

    ReplyDelete
  37. yea but i wouldnt want to wear what i want just because someone could judge me i want it because i want to

    ReplyDelete
  38. @EL Presidente bullying can happen to anyone not just students sometimes it can happen to adults and they dont even no its happened to them.teachers cam be bullyed by the principal like i saw on tv that a principal was being showing Racism to a teacher.so really its not only students that get bullyed in school but also outside of school and adults to.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i like not wearing uniform because it makes me feel more free.people do not judge you on just your clothes. if we wear uniform, we have to express ourselves with our personalities but we can still be judged. we shouldn't judge people at first glance but people do. that's how this world is. maybe we could take the initiative and change this but (linking this back to bullying) we come up with ideas but don't do them.

    ReplyDelete
  40. judging is simple and easy and we all do it.

what we can do is be aware, and with awareness comes action

    ReplyDelete
  41. so people have different roles in there life based on what they are.but what does that have to do with clothing(uniform). my point is that even if we play different roles does that mean certain people get more advantages than others .we are students and we have to wear dress code and our teachers have to wear certain things but there choices arte much more then ours like we omly get to wear blue, black and white while teachers can wear any colour.

bout the judging people i say that you should define who you are not your clothes not your work you YOU chould define who you are.cuz who you are is what you want to be if all of a sudden i wanted to be the most smartest person then that would define who i am and who i want to be.

Rebound Main Idea(i want my mark)

  42. @stephanie i agree with what you say there bullying can happen to anyone anywhere but only you can dicide how to put an end to it and realating to adults they are mature enough to do what right if thay dont, well then thats their choice uahhhhhhh now im even judgeing an amaginary person

    ReplyDelete
  43. Even if their a new teacher,
If they were to wear a suit and a tie , we still couldnt tell how they are. They could be a very bad person and just cause she/he wears proper clothing(suits, ties, etc.), you shouldnt judge them.

    ReplyDelete
  44. the way we act is how people will get to know us and understand our personality.but some people are shy and dont talk much so others can understand what that persons likes and dislikes are.

    ReplyDelete
  45. @ben-g k well you should find a way to put a stop to your imaginery person ang i agree you choose how to stop it and when to stop it sometimes we dont make the right choices like we think telling is going to make it worse or we should keep it a secret.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I think that uniforms are important because uniforms save your time in early mornings without you rushing and wasting your time on finding what you are going to wear. uniforms can also save your money because if you have uniforms than you only have to buy it once a year and that is okay because it is only once a year and only one pair unless you ripped your pants or anything like that. but if don't have a dress code than want to wear new clothes everyday and if you running out of clothes say, for example you wore all the clothes you have and there you have no new clothes left and you don't want to wear the clothes you wore before because you think your friends are going to make fun of you than you want to buy new clothes and every time you buy them you spend money and you want to buy lots of new clothes because you don't want to wear the old clothes and that's like wasting your money every time you buy them and when you have uniforms you just buy it once.

And also just like brown kid said no uniforms can also cause bullying because if you are going to wear the clothes you already wore than they are going to make fun of you and that can cause one type of bullying. do form my opinion i think that having uniforms is a good idea.

    ReplyDelete
  47. wearing uniform, dress code, or anything we want, doesnt stop us from being judged,we will be judged on something every day, but some of the time its just peoples opinion, and we cant change their impression of us. alot of people will try and change peoples opinion of themself, they do that because they cant accept anythig else than what they want to be known as.

    ReplyDelete
  48. @ hitakshee wearing uniform doesnt stop bullying, wearing the same colours as everyone else isnt the stop to bullying. the stop to bullying is diferent for every case, but uniform is definately not a way to stop it.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @Bailee i think wearing uniforms can stop bullying because wearing uniforms is like a great idea because everyone is the same and like i said before that if there is no dress code you always don't want to wear the same clothes over and over again and if you do than you know like in high school people are going to make fun of and you are going to be bullied< also Bailee i didn't only say bullying but i said "ONE TYPE OF BULLYING" and there are lots of ways you can get bullied. and not wearing uniforms is one kind of bullying in high school.
